Gaining weight is a completely natural phenomenon for people who have sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits. But what if it happens to someone who eats right and works out enough? Here we look at reasons for unexplained weight gain

Lack of sleep is a primary reason for people with otherwise healthy lifestyles to gain weight. The body only functions to its full capacity when it’s been appropriately energized- that is through sleep. Short night naps, staying up late into the night or interrupted sleep can severely impair sleep patterns. This will make your body store more fat to compensate for the energy loss. It can also lead to stress which you may not be able to handle properly due to the lack of rest.

Late night snacking can also add to your weight as it doesn’t really get burned off. You may not be aware of your sleep patterns being disturbed but there are some telltale signs that you may notice which could indicate the problem including fatigue, falling asleep at odd hours such as mid day, being irritable or just generally being low on energy. You should ideally get eight hours of sleep each day. Also, exercising regularly can help you sleep better.

Workplace and general lifestyle pressures of the 21st century can often demand more then we can give. This tends to affect our sleeping patterns, moods and emotions and may cause us to seek reprieve in harmful substances such as alcohol, drugs and unhealthy foods. The body enters into survival mode in this period and starts storing the fat within the body which will eventually lead to obesity.

Food also makes us feel good which is why many of us reach out to it when under stress. Most food choices made during this period contain high levels of carbohydrates which trigger the release of serotonin which lightens the mood. The best way to deal with stress however is to simply exercise and practice relaxation techniques such as yoga.

Medications can also lead to weight gain. Certain drugs such as the ones prescribed for depression, mood disorders, blood pressure, seizures, diabetes and migraine can all lead to weight gain. Hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives and steroids can also add pounds.
